About Retinal Detachment Surgery

Retinal detachment occurs when the light-sensitive retina at the back of the eye separates from the underlying tissue that supplies it with oxygen and nutrients, a serious condition that can cause permanent vision loss if not treated promptly. Patients often notice sudden flashes of light, a rapid increase in floaters, or a shadow or curtain moving across their field of vision, and urgent evaluation is generally recommended when these symptoms appear. Surgical repair options depend on the type, location, and severity of the detachment: pneumatic retinopexy involves injecting a gas bubble into the eye to help reposition the retina, scleral buckling involves placing a flexible band around the outside of the eye to relieve the pulling that caused the detachment, and vitrectomy involves removing the gel-like vitreous humor from inside the eye and replacing it with a gas or silicone oil bubble to hold the retina in place while it heals. In many cases, a combination of these techniques is used. Recovery can involve maintaining a specific head position for a period after surgery, particularly when a gas bubble is used. Eye hospitals in India are generally equipped to manage retinal detachment as a time-sensitive surgical emergency.
