Keratoconus is a progressive eye condition in which the normally round cornea gradually thins and bulges outward into a cone-like shape, distorting vision and causing increasing nearsightedness and irregular astigmatism that is often difficult to correct fully with regular glasses. Treatment approaches depend on how advanced the condition is at diagnosis: in earlier stages, specialty contact lenses, such as rigid gas-permeable or scleral lenses, are often used to compensate for the irregular corneal surface and improve vision, while corneal cross-linking is used to strengthen the cornea and slow or halt further progression once thinning is confirmed to be advancing. In more advanced cases where vision cannot be adequately corrected with lenses, or the cornea has become significantly thinned, procedures such as implantation of corneal ring segments to flatten the cone shape, or, in severe cases, a corneal transplant, may be recommended. Diagnosis and monitoring rely heavily on corneal topography, which maps the surface shape of the eye over time to detect progression. Because keratoconus often develops during the teenage or young adult years, regular monitoring is important. Eye centers in India typically offer the full spectrum of keratoconus management, from specialty lens fitting to cross-linking and transplant surgery, under one roof.
