About Optic Neuritis Treatment

Optic neuritis is inflammation of the optic nerve that typically causes sudden vision loss or blurring in one eye, often accompanied by pain that worsens with eye movement and reduced color perception, and most commonly affects younger adults. It can occur on its own or as an early sign of an underlying demyelinating condition such as multiple sclerosis, which is why diagnosis usually involves a detailed neurological and ophthalmic examination, visual field testing, and an MRI scan of the brain and optic nerves to look for other areas of inflammation or damage that might indicate a broader underlying condition. Blood tests may also be used to rule out other inflammatory or infectious causes. In many cases, vision recovers substantially on its own over several weeks, but treatment with intravenous corticosteroids is often used to speed up visual recovery, particularly in more severe cases, and in patients found to have an underlying demyelinating condition, additional long-term therapy may be recommended to reduce the risk of future episodes. Ongoing follow-up with both neurology and ophthalmology is typically recommended after an episode. Eye centers in India managing optic neuritis usually coordinate closely with neurology departments to investigate and treat any underlying systemic cause.
