Astigmatism is a common refractive condition in which an irregularly curved cornea, or sometimes lens, causes light to focus at multiple points rather than a single point on the retina, resulting in blurred or distorted vision at both near and far distances. Surgical correction most often involves laser vision correction techniques such as LASIK, SMILE, or topography-guided procedures, which reshape the cornea's surface to create a more uniform curvature that focuses light correctly, using an excimer or femtosecond laser guided by detailed measurements of the eye's specific astigmatic pattern. For patients undergoing cataract surgery, astigmatism can also be addressed at the same time through the use of a toric intraocular lens, which is designed with additional correcting power aligned to the axis of the astigmatism, or through small limbal relaxing incisions made in the cornea. The right approach depends on the degree and type of astigmatism, corneal thickness, and whether the patient also needs correction for nearsightedness or farsightedness or has any coexisting eye conditions such as keratoconus. A comprehensive pre-operative evaluation, including corneal mapping, is used to determine candidacy and plan the correction. Eye centers in India offer this full range of laser and lens-based options for correcting astigmatism.
