Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that increases breast size and changes breast shape using silicone or saline implants, or in some cases a patient's own fat transferred from another area of the body. The surgeon places the implant through an incision, commonly around the areola, in the natural fold beneath the breast, or in the armpit, positioning it either above or below the chest muscle depending on the patient's anatomy and desired outcome. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes one to two hours. Candidates include women who feel their breast size is disproportionate to their frame, those wanting to restore volume lost after pregnancy or weight change, and patients undergoing reconstruction. Recovery involves swelling, tightness, and restricted arm movement for one to two weeks, with most patients returning to light activity within that time and to full exercise after four to six weeks. Implants are not considered lifetime devices and may eventually need monitoring or replacement. Patients traveling to India for augmentation generally plan a stay of ten to fourteen days to allow the surgeon to check incisions and early healing before travel.
