About Tympanoplasty (Eardrum Repair)

Tympanoplasty is a surgical procedure to repair a perforated or damaged eardrum, most often caused by chronic ear infections, trauma, or a previous injury, which can lead to hearing loss and recurrent infections if left untreated. The surgeon typically uses a small graft of the patient's own tissue, often taken from beneath the skin near the ear or from cartilage, to patch the hole and restore the eardrum's ability to vibrate and transmit sound. Depending on the extent of damage, the procedure may also involve repairing the tiny middle ear bones if they have been affected by infection or disease. Tympanoplasty is usually performed under local or general anesthesia through the ear canal or a small incision behind the ear, and typically takes one to two hours. Most patients go home the same day or after a short overnight stay, with ear drops prescribed and precautions to keep the ear dry while it heals over the following weeks. India's ENT surgical centers perform tympanoplasty routinely using microscopic or endoscopic ear surgery techniques for precise, minimally invasive repair. International patients typically need about one to two weeks in India to allow for the procedure and an initial post-operative check before travel.
