Adenoid surgery, or adenoidectomy, is the surgical removal of the adenoids, a patch of lymphoid tissue at the back of the nasal cavity that can become chronically enlarged or infected, most commonly in children. Enlarged adenoids can obstruct the airway behind the nose, leading to persistent nasal blockage, mouth breathing, snoring, recurrent ear infections from blocked middle-ear drainage, and in some cases disrupted sleep. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia through the mouth, without any external incision, using instruments or a microdebrider to remove the adenoid tissue, typically taking fifteen to thirty minutes. It is often performed alongside tonsillectomy when both the tonsils and adenoids are enlarged and causing symptoms together. Most children go home the same day or after a short overnight observation, with a few days of mild throat or ear discomfort and a soft diet recommended during initial healing. Improvement in nasal breathing, snoring, and recurrent ear infections is usually noticeable within a few weeks. India's pediatric ENT surgeons perform adenoidectomy routinely, often coordinating it with tonsillectomy in a single anesthetic when appropriate. International families typically plan for about a week in India to allow for the procedure and a brief follow-up review before travel home.
