About Nasal Septum Surgery (Septoplasty)

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure to correct a deviated nasal septum, the thin wall of cartilage and bone dividing the two nostrils, when it is bent or displaced enough to cause nasal obstruction, breathing difficulty, recurrent sinus infections, or disrupted sleep. A deviated septum may be present from birth or result from an injury to the nose. During the procedure, performed under local or general anesthesia through incisions made inside the nose with no visible external scarring, the surgeon straightens the septum by trimming, repositioning, or removing the cartilage and bone causing obstruction, while preserving enough structural support to maintain the shape of the nose. The operation typically takes thirty minutes to an hour, and most patients go home the same day or after a short overnight stay, sometimes with temporary internal splints to support healing. Improvement in nasal breathing is usually noticeable within a few weeks as post-operative swelling subsides. India's ENT surgeons perform septoplasty routinely, often combining it with sinus surgery or turbinate reduction when needed for a complete breathing correction. International patients typically plan for about one to two weeks to allow for the procedure and a follow-up check before traveling home.
