About Cochlear Implant Surgery

A cochlear implant is an electronic device surgically implanted to provide a sense of sound to people with severe to profound hearing loss who no longer benefit sufficiently from conventional hearing aids. Unlike a hearing aid, which amplifies sound, a cochlear implant bypasses the damaged part of the inner ear and directly stimulates the auditory nerve using electrical signals. The device consists of an external processor worn behind the ear, which captures and digitizes sound, and an internal receiver and electrode array that a surgeon places into the cochlea during a procedure performed under general anesthesia, typically taking two to three hours. Candidates undergo detailed hearing assessments, inner-ear imaging, and counseling beforehand, as outcomes depend on factors such as age at implantation and duration of hearing loss. After a short hospital stay, the external device is fitted and activated several weeks after surgery, followed by auditory rehabilitation and mapping sessions to fine-tune the processor's settings. India's ENT and cochlear implant centers treat both children and adults, with programs experienced in pediatric implantation for congenital hearing loss. International patients should plan for an initial visit for surgery and a return visit some weeks later for activation and programming.
