About Thyroid Gland Surgery

Thyroid surgery, or thyroidectomy, involves the surgical removal of part or all of the thyroid gland, the butterfly-shaped gland in the neck that regulates metabolism through hormone production. It is commonly performed for thyroid nodules suspicious for or confirmed to be cancer, large goiters causing compression of the windpipe or swallowing difficulty, overactive thyroid conditions not adequately controlled by medication or radioactive iodine, or nodules that cannot be clearly diagnosed without removing tissue for examination. Depending on the condition, the surgeon may remove just one lobe or the entire gland, performed under general anesthesia through an incision in the lower neck, typically taking one to three hours, with careful technique used to protect the nearby nerves controlling the voice box and the small parathyroid glands that regulate calcium. Most patients stay in hospital for one to two days for monitoring of calcium levels and voice function before discharge. Patients who have the entire thyroid removed require lifelong thyroid hormone replacement medication. India's endocrine surgery centers perform thyroidectomy routinely, often supported by ultrasound-guided biopsy and pathology services for pre-operative diagnosis. International patients typically plan for about one to two weeks to cover surgery, monitoring, and initial follow-up before travel home.
