About Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)

Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) is an advanced form of external beam radiation that shapes and varies the intensity of hundreds of individual radiation beams to closely match the three-dimensional shape of a tumor, delivering a higher, more effective dose to the cancer while sparing surrounding healthy tissue and organs. It is widely used in India for head and neck, prostate, breast, brain, and gynecologic cancers, where nearby structures such as the spinal cord, salivary glands, or bladder need to be protected from radiation damage. Treatment planning begins with a CT simulation scan, which a radiation oncologist and medical physicist use to map the tumor and design a beam plan on specialized software before treatment starts. IMRT is delivered in short daily outpatient sessions, typically five days a week over several weeks, with each session lasting 15–20 minutes. Because the technique reduces radiation to healthy tissue, patients generally experience fewer side effects than with older radiation techniques, such as less dry mouth after head and neck treatment or better bowel and bladder tolerance after pelvic radiation. Regular imaging checks ensure the treatment stays precisely targeted throughout the course.
