About Gamma Knife Surgery

Gamma Knife surgery is a form of stereotactic radiosurgery that treats brain tumors, vascular abnormalities, and certain functional brain disorders without any incision, using around two hundred precisely focused beams of gamma radiation that converge on the target from multiple angles while sparing surrounding healthy tissue. Before treatment, a lightweight stereotactic frame or mask is fitted to the patient's head to keep it perfectly still and to provide exact coordinates, after which MRI or CT imaging is used to map the target area in detail. The radiation beams are then aimed so that each individual beam carries a low dose through healthy brain tissue, while the point where they all intersect receives a concentrated therapeutic dose. Because it is non-invasive, Gamma Knife treatment is typically completed in a single outpatient session lasting a few hours, with no general anesthesia and a very short recovery time compared with open surgery. It is commonly used for small to medium brain tumors, arteriovenous malformations, and trigeminal neuralgia. India's Gamma Knife centres allow international patients to complete an entire treatment episode, from imaging to therapy, within a short visit.
