A brain aneurysm is a weakened, bulging area in the wall of a blood vessel within the brain that carries a risk of rupture and life-threatening bleeding, and treatment aims to seal off the aneurysm from normal blood circulation before this happens or after it has occurred. Two main approaches are used: microsurgical clipping, in which the surgeon opens the skull and places a small metal clip across the base of the aneurysm to stop blood flow into it, and endovascular coiling, a catheter-based technique in which soft platinum coils or a stent-assisted device are threaded through the blood vessels from the groin or wrist up to the aneurysm to pack it and promote clotting. The choice between the two depends on the aneurysm's size, shape, and location, as well as the patient's overall health. Endovascular treatment is less invasive and often allows a faster recovery, while clipping may be preferred for certain complex aneurysms. Both approaches require advanced imaging such as CT or catheter angiography for planning, and India's specialist neurovascular centres provide both surgical and endovascular options along with the intensive monitoring needed afterward.
