Intracytoplasmic sperm injection, or ICSI, is a specialized laboratory technique used alongside IVF in which a single sperm is selected and injected directly into the center of a mature egg using a fine glass needle, rather than allowing fertilization to occur naturally in a dish. This bypasses barriers that might otherwise prevent sperm from penetrating the egg on its own. ICSI follows the same ovarian stimulation and egg-retrieval process as conventional IVF, with the difference occurring at the fertilization stage in the laboratory; the resulting embryos are then cultured and transferred using the same protocols. ICSI is primarily recommended for male-factor infertility, including low sperm count, poor sperm motility, abnormal sperm shape, or when sperm has been surgically retrieved rather than ejaculated, as well as in cases of previous fertilization failure with standard IVF. It does not change the ovarian stimulation, retrieval, or transfer timeline, so the overall cycle length is similar to standard IVF, typically around two to three weeks from stimulation to transfer. Because the technique requires no additional patient-side procedure beyond standard IVF, patients traveling to India for ICSI generally follow the same visit structure as an IVF cycle, coordinated around their stimulation and retrieval dates.
