About Artificial Insemination

Artificial insemination is a general term for fertility procedures in which sperm is placed into a woman's reproductive tract by means other than intercourse, most commonly through intrauterine insemination (IUI), where prepared sperm is injected into the uterus, or intracervical insemination (ICI), where sperm is placed at the cervix. The sperm used may come from a partner or from a screened donor, and the cycle is typically timed to coincide with ovulation, tracked through basal body monitoring, ovulation kits, or clinical ultrasound, with or without ovulation-stimulating medication depending on the patient's history. The procedure itself is brief, performed in a clinic without anesthesia, and involves minimal discomfort and no significant recovery period, allowing patients to resume normal activities immediately. Artificial insemination is generally recommended for mild fertility issues, unexplained infertility, donor sperm use by single patients or same-sex couples, or as a first step before considering more involved treatments such as IVF. Because each cycle relies on precise ovulation timing, patients may need to undergo more than one attempt before conceiving. Its relatively short, low-intervention nature makes artificial insemination a treatment that international patients can often complete within a single short visit to a fertility clinic in India.
