About Kyphoplasty

Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure closely related to vertebroplasty, used to treat painful vertebral compression fractures, most often caused by osteoporosis, by both stabilizing the fractured bone and attempting to restore some of the height it has lost. Working through a small skin incision under imaging guidance, the physician inserts a narrow tube into the fractured vertebral body and threads in a small balloon, which is then carefully inflated to create a cavity within the bone and, where possible, lift the collapsed vertebra back toward its original height. The balloon is then deflated and removed, and the resulting cavity is filled with bone cement, which hardens to support the vertebra in its improved position. This added step of height restoration may also help reduce the abnormal spinal curvature that can develop after multiple compression fractures. The procedure is typically done under local anesthesia with sedation and usually takes less than an hour per vertebral level treated, with most patients experiencing meaningful pain relief within a short time afterward. India's spine centres offer kyphoplasty as a same-day or short-stay procedure for patients whose fracture pain has not improved with conservative management.
