About Corpectomy

Corpectomy is a spinal surgery in which all or part of a vertebral body, the main load-bearing block of bone in the spine, is surgically removed along with the adjacent discs, typically to relieve severe spinal cord compression caused by a large disc herniation, bone spur formation, a fracture, a tumor, or an infection affecting multiple levels that cannot be adequately addressed by removing disc material alone. After the affected vertebral body is removed, the resulting gap is reconstructed using a bone graft, a metal cage, or a combination of both, which is then secured with plates, screws, or rods to restore stability and support the spine while the graft gradually fuses with the adjacent healthy vertebrae. Corpectomy can be performed in the neck or lower back depending on where the underlying problem is located, and is generally reserved for more extensive cases than a standard discectomy or laminectomy can adequately treat. Because it involves reconstructing a significant portion of the spinal column, recovery is more gradual and involves close monitoring of the healing graft and instrumentation. India's spine surgery centres perform corpectomy with the reconstructive implants and neuromonitoring support this more extensive procedure requires.
