About Cervical Laminoplasty

Cervical laminoplasty is a motion-preserving alternative to laminectomy for relieving spinal cord compression in the neck, typically performed for multilevel cervical spinal stenosis or myelopathy, in which the spinal canal has narrowed enough to compress the spinal cord and cause symptoms such as hand clumsiness, gait imbalance, or limb weakness. Rather than removing the lamina entirely, the surgeon cuts a hinge on one side of the bony arch and opens it like a door on the other side, propping it in this expanded position with small plates or spacers to permanently enlarge the spinal canal while keeping most of the natural bony architecture intact. This approach avoids the need for fusion at multiple levels, which helps preserve more of the neck's natural range of motion compared with laminectomy combined with fusion. Laminoplasty is generally suited to patients whose neck alignment is otherwise stable, since it works best when the spine is not already prone to abnormal curvature. Recovery involves gradual mobilization and physical therapy to regain neck strength and movement. India's spine centres offer laminoplasty as part of their range of cervical decompression options, guided by imaging that helps determine which technique best suits an individual patient's anatomy.
