About Prostate Surgery

Prostate surgery covers a range of procedures used to treat either benign prostatic hyperplasia, a common non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate that obstructs urine flow, or prostate cancer confined to the gland. For benign enlargement, the most common approach is transurethral resection of the prostate, or TURP, in which a scope passed through the urethra removes excess prostate tissue to relieve blockage, with newer laser-based techniques such as holmium laser enucleation offering similar relief with less bleeding. For prostate cancer, radical prostatectomy removes the entire prostate gland along with surrounding tissue and is increasingly performed using laparoscopic or robotic-assisted techniques, allowing precise dissection through small incisions with better preservation of surrounding nerves controlling continence and sexual function where oncologically appropriate. The choice of procedure depends on the underlying condition, prostate size, cancer stage if present, and the patient's overall health, and is guided by prior imaging, PSA levels, and biopsy findings. Surgery is performed under spinal or general anesthesia and duration varies with technique and complexity. Indian urology centers offer both conventional and robotic-assisted prostate surgery. Recovery includes a period with a urinary catheter in place, with continence and function gradually improving over the following weeks to months.
