About Dialysis Care

Dialysis care provides ongoing treatment for patients whose kidneys can no longer adequately filter waste products, excess fluid, and toxins from the blood, most often due to chronic kidney disease that has progressed to kidney failure. Hemodialysis, the more common form, circulates the patient's blood through an external machine fitted with a filtering membrane that removes waste and excess fluid before returning cleaned blood to the body, typically performed several times a week in sessions lasting a few hours through a surgically created vascular access point in the arm. Peritoneal dialysis, an alternative approach, uses the lining of the patient's own abdominal cavity as a natural filter, with a specially formulated fluid introduced and later drained through a permanently placed catheter, a process that can often be managed at home. The choice between the two depends on the patient's kidney function, overall health, lifestyle, and personal preference, guided by a nephrologist's assessment. Indian nephrology centers offer both modalities along with vascular access surgery and ongoing monitoring of kidney function, anemia, and mineral balance. For patients with progressive kidney failure, dialysis is often a bridge toward eventual kidney transplantation, alongside pre-transplant evaluation and long-term management planning.
