An arm lift, or brachioplasty, removes excess skin and fat from the upper arm and tightens the underlying tissue to create a smoother, more toned contour, addressing the loose, hanging skin that can develop after significant weight loss or with aging. The surgeon typically makes an incision along the inner or back of the upper arm, extending from the elbow toward the armpit depending on how much skin needs to be removed, and may combine the procedure with liposuction to refine the contour further. It is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes about two hours. Candidates are patients with loose, sagging upper arm skin that has not improved with exercise, often following major weight loss, who are at a stable weight and in good general health. Recovery involves wearing a compression garment for several weeks, with swelling and restricted arm movement for the first one to two weeks and a gradual return to normal activity over four to six weeks. Because the resulting scar runs the length of the inner arm, patients are counseled on scar care during recovery. Patients traveling to India for an arm lift usually plan a stay of around two weeks to allow for suture removal and wound monitoring.
