In vitro fertilization is a fertility treatment in which eggs are retrieved from the ovaries after a course of hormonal stimulation and combined with sperm in a laboratory dish to achieve fertilization outside the body. The resulting embryos are cultured for several days, monitored for development, and one or more are then transferred into the uterus, with any additional viable embryos typically frozen for future use. The process involves an initial cycle of injectable hormone medication to stimulate multiple eggs to mature, monitored through blood tests and ultrasound, followed by a minor egg-retrieval procedure done under sedation, laboratory fertilization, embryo culture, and finally embryo transfer, which does not require anesthesia. IVF is recommended for a wide range of causes of infertility, including blocked or damaged fallopian tubes, ovulation disorders, male-factor infertility, unexplained infertility, or after other treatments such as IUI have not succeeded. A full cycle from the start of stimulation to embryo transfer typically spans about two to three weeks, followed by a pregnancy test roughly two weeks after transfer. Patients traveling to India for IVF usually plan their stay around this stimulation-to-transfer window, with clinics coordinating cycle timing in advance based on the patient's baseline test results.
