Limb lengthening surgery gradually increases the length of a shortened bone, most often in the leg, to correct limb length discrepancy caused by congenital conditions, childhood growth plate injury, infection, fracture malunion, or certain skeletal dysplasias. The surgeon first performs a controlled surgical cut of the bone, called an osteotomy, without disturbing the surrounding blood supply, then applies either an external fixator frame worn outside the limb or an internal, magnetically driven lengthening nail placed inside the bone. Over the following weeks, the device is adjusted daily in tiny increments, typically around one millimeter per day, allowing new bone to form gradually in the gap while soft tissues, nerves, and blood vessels stretch alongside it. The total treatment period, including the lengthening phase and subsequent bone consolidation, generally spans several months and requires close monitoring with periodic X-rays to track bone healing and adjust the plan as needed. Indian limb reconstruction centers offer both external fixator and internal nail techniques depending on the amount of lengthening required and patient preference. Physiotherapy throughout the process helps maintain joint motion and muscle strength, and most patients need an extended stay in the treating country to allow safe monitoring during the active lengthening phase.
