About Liver Transplant

A liver transplant replaces a diseased or failing liver with a healthy one, performed in patients with end-stage liver disease, cirrhosis, certain liver cancers within defined size and number limits, or acute liver failure. The replacement liver may come from a deceased donor or, more commonly in India, from a living donor who gives a portion of their own liver, which regenerates to near-full size in both donor and recipient within a few months. During the operation, the diseased liver is removed and the donor liver or liver segment is connected to the recipient's blood vessels and bile duct, a complex procedure that typically takes eight to twelve hours and requires an experienced transplant surgical team. Recipients spend time in intensive care immediately after surgery, followed by one to two weeks in hospital, and begin lifelong immunosuppressive medication to prevent organ rejection. India's transplant centers have extensive experience with living-donor liver transplantation, including thorough donor evaluation to confirm safety for the donor. International patients typically need an accompanying potential living donor and should plan for an extended stay of several weeks to complete donor and recipient evaluation, surgery, and the critical early recovery period before travel home is considered safe.
