About Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment, or endodontic therapy, removes infected or inflamed pulp tissue from inside a tooth to relieve pain and save a tooth that might otherwise need extraction. It is typically needed when deep decay, a cracked tooth, or repeated dental procedures allow bacteria to reach the pulp chamber and root canals, causing infection, swelling, or persistent pain, particularly with hot, cold, or pressure. Under local anesthesia, the dentist creates a small opening in the tooth, removes the damaged pulp, and cleans and shapes the root canals before filling them with a biocompatible material to seal out further infection. Because a treated tooth becomes more brittle without its blood supply, it is usually capped with a crown afterward, especially for back teeth that bear heavy chewing forces. Modern root canal treatment is generally completed over one or two visits using rotary instruments and, in many clinics, operating microscopes for greater precision, and most patients experience significant relief from pre-treatment pain rather than added discomfort. Dental centers in India commonly use digital X-rays and apex locators to map canal anatomy accurately, helping ensure thorough cleaning and a well-sealed result.
