About Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a custom-fabricated cap, typically made from porcelain, zirconia, metal, or a combination of these materials, that fully covers a damaged or weakened tooth to restore its shape, strength, and appearance. Crowns are recommended when a tooth has been significantly weakened by a large filling, cracked, worn down, or treated with root canal therapy, since the procedure often removes enough tooth structure that the remaining tooth needs additional support to withstand normal biting forces. Placement usually involves shaping the tooth to make room for the crown, taking a digital or physical impression, and fitting a temporary crown while the permanent one is fabricated, often in a dental laboratory, before it is cemented into place at a follow-up visit. Same-day crown systems using in-office milling technology can shorten this process considerably by designing and producing the crown chairside. Crowns are also used to cap dental implants and to anchor bridges replacing missing teeth. Dental clinics in India commonly offer a choice of crown materials with varying aesthetics and durability, and many use digital scanning and on-site milling to reduce the number of visits required.
