Endovascular aortic aneurysm repair, or EVAR, is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat an aortic aneurysm — a bulging, weakened section of the body's main artery that carries a risk of rupture if left untreated. Rather than opening the abdomen or chest to replace the affected segment directly, a vascular surgeon accesses the femoral arteries in the groin and threads a fabric-covered metal stent graft through the blood vessels to the aneurysm site, where it is expanded to line the artery from the inside and redirect blood flow away from the weakened wall. The procedure is performed under regional or general anesthesia, guided by continuous X-ray imaging, and typically takes one to three hours depending on the aneurysm's location and complexity. Because it avoids a large surgical incision, recovery is generally faster than with open repair, with many patients mobilizing within a day or two and leaving hospital within about a week. Careful CT imaging beforehand confirms the aneurysm's shape and size are suitable for a stent graft. India's vascular surgery centers offer EVAR with a range of stent graft devices, and international patients typically plan for about two weeks to allow for evaluation, the procedure, and post-procedure imaging follow-up.
