About Cardiac Catheterization

Cardiac catheterization is a diagnostic and sometimes therapeutic procedure in which a thin, flexible catheter is guided through a blood vessel, usually in the wrist or groin, into the chambers and arteries of the heart to directly assess how it is functioning. Using X-ray guidance and contrast dye, the cardiologist can visualize the coronary arteries for blockages, measure pressures within the heart chambers, assess valve function, and take tissue samples in some cases. It is commonly used to investigate chest pain, abnormal stress test results, heart failure of unclear cause, or suspected valve or congenital heart disease, and often serves as the first step before deciding whether angioplasty, stenting, or surgery is needed. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia with light sedation, usually takes thirty minutes to an hour, and most patients can go home the same day or after an overnight stay. India's catheterization laboratories are equipped with modern imaging systems that allow precise diagnosis and, where appropriate, immediate treatment in the same sitting. International patients typically need only a short visit for the procedure itself, with results and next steps discussed directly with the cardiology team.
