About Gastric Bypass

Gastric bypass, most commonly performed as a Roux-en-Y procedure, is a weight-loss surgery that both reduces stomach capacity and alters how food moves through the digestive tract. Working laparoscopically through small abdominal incisions, the surgeon creates a small pouch from the upper part of the stomach and divides the small intestine, connecting a lower segment directly to this new pouch so that food bypasses most of the stomach and the first portion of the small intestine. This combination restricts the amount of food that can be eaten at one time and reduces the absorption of calories and certain nutrients, while also producing hormonal changes that help control appetite and can improve blood sugar regulation. It is generally recommended for patients with a higher body mass index, significant obesity-related health conditions such as type 2 diabetes or acid reflux, or those who have not achieved adequate results with a sleeve gastrectomy. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes around two to three hours. Indian bariatric surgery units offer gastric bypass with established laparoscopic and, in some centers, robotic-assisted techniques. Because nutrient absorption is altered, patients require lifelong vitamin and mineral supplementation along with regular follow-up monitoring after returning home.
