Endoscopic brain surgery is a minimally invasive neurosurgical technique that uses a thin, rigid or flexible endoscope fitted with a camera and light source to access and treat conditions deep within the brain through small openings rather than a large craniotomy. Common uses include removing certain tumors, treating hydrocephalus by creating a new pathway for cerebrospinal fluid drainage, draining cysts, and accessing the pituitary gland through the nose. The surgeon guides the endoscope through narrow natural corridors or a small bone opening while viewing magnified, high-resolution images on a monitor, allowing precise instrument manipulation with minimal disturbance to surrounding brain tissue. Because the incisions and bone removal involved are much smaller than in conventional open surgery, patients generally experience less postoperative pain, reduced blood loss, and a shorter hospital stay. Not every brain condition is suitable for an endoscopic approach, and the decision depends on the size, location, and nature of the lesion. India's larger neurosurgical centres offer this technology alongside the imaging and neuro-anesthesia support it requires, making it accessible to patients travelling from abroad for advanced, less invasive care.
