LASIK, or laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, is a refractive surgery that reshapes the cornea to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, reducing or eliminating a patient's dependence on glasses or contact lenses. During the procedure, the surgeon creates a thin, hinged flap in the outer layer of the cornea, folds it back, and uses an excimer laser to precisely remove microscopic amounts of underlying corneal tissue to correct the eye's focusing power, before repositioning the flap, which adheres naturally without stitches. The entire procedure typically takes only a few minutes per eye and is performed under numbing eye drops, with most patients noticing improved vision within a day. Candidates are generally adults with stable vision prescriptions and corneas of adequate thickness, since insufficient corneal tissue or certain eye conditions can make LASIK unsuitable, in which case alternative procedures may be recommended after a detailed pre-operative evaluation including corneal mapping. Mild dryness or glare around lights can occur temporarily during healing. Eye hospitals in India commonly use advanced diagnostic mapping and a range of laser platforms to plan LASIK precisely, and the procedure is typically completed within a single-day visit.
