Vagus nerve stimulation, or VNS, is a treatment in which a small device resembling a pacemaker is implanted under the skin of the upper chest and connected by a thin wire to the vagus nerve in the neck, where it delivers mild, regular electrical pulses to help reduce the frequency and severity of seizures. It is generally considered for patients with epilepsy whose seizures have not responded adequately to anti-seizure medications and who are not good candidates for, or have not benefited from, resective brain surgery. VNS therapy has also been approved for certain cases of treatment-resistant depression. The implant procedure itself is relatively brief and is usually performed under general anesthesia, with the device positioned through two small incisions, one at the chest and one at the neck. Once activated, stimulation settings can be adjusted externally by a specialist using a handheld programmer to balance symptom control against side effects such as voice changes or throat discomfort. Because VNS is not a cure but a way to reduce seizure burden over time, ongoing follow-up is required, and India's epilepsy centres provide both the implantation procedure and the longer-term programming this therapy depends on.
