CyberKnife is a robotic radiosurgery system used to deliver precisely targeted, high-dose radiation to tumors and other abnormal tissue in the brain and spine without cutting the skin, using a compact linear accelerator mounted on a robotic arm that can aim beams from thousands of different angles. Unlike frame-based systems, CyberKnife tracks the target's position continuously throughout treatment using built-in imaging, automatically correcting for small movements, which means no rigid head frame needs to be screwed into the skull beforehand. This makes it suitable for tumors near sensitive structures such as the brainstem or spinal cord, where a wide margin of healthy tissue cannot be sacrificed. Treatment planning uses fused MRI and CT scans to outline the target precisely, and the radiation is usually delivered over one to five outpatient sessions rather than the many weeks required by conventional radiotherapy. Each session is painless and does not require anesthesia, typically lasting under two hours, after which patients can resume normal activity. This shortened schedule is particularly convenient for patients travelling to India from overseas, since it limits the length of stay needed to complete an entire course of radiation.
