Laparoscopic hysterectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to remove the uterus using a camera and specialized instruments inserted through several small abdominal incisions, rather than the single larger incision used in open surgery. Depending on the patient's condition, the surgeon may perform a total hysterectomy, removing the uterus and cervix, or a subtotal procedure that preserves the cervix, and the ovaries may or may not be removed at the same time depending on the diagnosis and the patient's age. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes one to three hours. It is generally recommended for conditions such as large or numerous fibroids, adenomyosis, chronic pelvic pain, abnormal uterine bleeding unresponsive to other treatment, or certain gynecologic conditions where fertility preservation is no longer a goal. Compared with open surgery, the laparoscopic approach generally involves smaller scars, less postoperative pain, a shorter hospital stay of one to two days, and a faster return to normal activity, typically within two to four weeks. Patients traveling to India for laparoscopic hysterectomy typically plan a stay of about two weeks to allow the surgical team to monitor recovery and confirm healing before international travel.
